This certificate was donated by the Executors of the artist’s Estate to Nottingham Town Archives.
In 1916 the artist met Joe Shears at Whitley Camp, Goldalming arising from the commission from Lord Beaverbrook to paint Canadian soldiers. The commissioned work is shown under Artist Works – See Physical training camp 1917.
Joe Shears became a friend of the artist and through his army acquaintances introduced her to the sport of wrestling by visiting the Club just off Clapham High Street at 76 Cottage Grove London. Again as a subject new to the artist, and one where the participants had to spend hours training to perfect their profession, the artist soon became fascinated with the sport. In order that the artist could spend hours sketching scenes of the training and the wrestling rings, the Club made the artist an Honorary member.
