The work depicts Dame Eileen Rosemary Mayo DBE RA who modeled for the artist in several other well known works and at the time also for the artist’s close friend Dod Proctor.
The model subsequently modeled for several other well known artists of the time that included Vanessa Bell and Mark Gertler.
Eileen Mayo studied at the Slade Art School, Chelsea Polytechnic under Henry Moore and Fernand Leger at the Academie Montmarte Paris and subsequently became a well known artist herself. In later years Eileen Mayo moved to Australia.
