Oil on canvas 24½ x 20½ inches
First exhibited not known. Possibly London Royal Academy 1962 No. 31 titled “Laura Knight at the age of fourteen”
Painted when Laura Johnson was 14 and Harold Knight was 17, not long after Dame Laura joined the Nottingham School of Art.
The work demonstrates the artist’s admiration for Vermeer with the play of light and colour across Laura and the restrained range of tones.
Only bequest of works to the London Royal Academy by Laura Knight in her Will in 1970; being her favourite picture of all her husbands’ because its brought such fond memories of when they first met.
