Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inches
First exhibited London Royal Academy 1926 No. 388
This painting is one of the finest examples of the artist’s work in portraiture.
The sitter was a young pianist whose serene beauty captivated both the artist and her husband Harold Knight. The sitter, wife to the famous pianist Rae Robertson toured both Europe and USA, where they later settled down, as duet pianists.
Although this portrait is very realistic there is much more in it than a mere photographic representation. Whilst it commands attention from a distance, it also bears close inspection and study on account of the artist’s perception and use of colour and expression of form.
