The two members of The Women’s Auxiliary Air Force serving at Biggin Hill, were awarded the Military Medal on 1st September 1940, for valiant war effort work .
Both ladies were on duty in the Operations Room during an air raid and they continued working during an air raid being aware that the roof overhead provided light protection whilst bombs continuing to be dropped nearby. The building took a direct hit, but still they continued at their posts until they were ordered to get out by which stage the building was on fire. After being ordered out of the building the two young ladies then commenced to assist in clearing up a direct hit on the Guardroom, where a number of deaths had occurred. The detail of this event was provided by the daughter of Elspeth Henderson.
