Laura Knight: Daughters of the Sun 1911 aka Glorious June.
This painting is referred to in the artist’s first autobiography Oil Paint and Grease Paint, and during World War 1 went on the rounds of UK Provincial Galleries. As a result the picture became so badly damaged that the artist felt that there was no hope in repairing the great work; it had been left out in the rain for a long time, it was “split all over, the paint had lifted from the cloth and its handsome frame almost crumbled away”.The artist kept it for many years face to the wall, but in 1936 she very reluctantly decided that it had to be destroyed as completely unrepairable. “I felt a murderer” OPGP p. 176.
There is no know record of this work except for a print in The Studio magazine. Of recent date a fan of the artist has decided to employ a printing company to reproduce in colour a limited number of six reproductions; one of which will be sold off in London with all proceeds going to the artist’s favourite art charity – The Artists’ General Benevolent Institution.
Further details will be provided shortly.
